Cloth for Rawlings’ funeral pops up; check out name [Photo]
A new textile print has been introduced for the funeral of former President Jerry John Rawlings. The theme for the wax print is Odupɔn bi atutu, a Twi expression which means: ‘A big tree has fallen’. It was designed by Tex Styles Ghana Limited, formerly Ghana Textiles Printing Company Limited, at the instance of the family of the late President. The name of the cloth was chosen to immortalise the memory of the first President of the Fourth Republic. The Head of Design, Premium African Textiles/Tex Styles Ghana Limited, Bismarck Adu-Asare, told the Daily Graphic in Tema that following the demise of the former President, the family contacted the company to come up with a design and name for the fabric. With the name and the theme in perspective, Tex Styles Ghana went into action to design something to meet the family’s preference. The concept Mr Adu-Asare explained that everybody valued a tree, hence in trying to design the cloth after initial discussions with the family, the company settled on some elements that must necessarily appear. They included a portrait of the late President Rawlings, with the English inscription: “A great tree has fallen,” he said. The print has the image of a fallen big tree, with some of the leaves still on it and others flying in the air, signifying that sometimes death occurs when the deceased still has much to offer. Mr Adu-Asare said the fabric also had the image of the favourite animal of the deceased, an eagle, flapping its wings in the air after the tree had fallen. There is also an arc around the eagle, which the company explained signalled that nothing happened in a vacuum. “Some will say his (Rawlings’) God has called him, while others will say his mother, who predeceased him in the same year, has called the beloved son,” Mr Adu-Asare explained. He added: “From the artist who designed the cloth, all those leaves could also represent other leaves of other trees around the tree which is falling. This could mean the fallen tree has affected the others around it, hence we believe Rawlings’s death has affected others.” Colours He said the fabric came in five colour combinations — red and black, black and curry pad, black and dark brown (the typical Asante Kuntukuni colour of grey), black and black and white. Mr Adu-Asare said the initial quantity requested was 10,000 yards, which had been released to the family, and expressed the hope that people would appreciate the designs. NDC version He said apart from the designs ordered by the family, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the party founded by the former President, had also ordered another design along the same theme: Odupɔn bi atutu. The fabric, which has the inscription: Odupɔn kɛseɛ bi atutu and its Ewe translation: Atsi gaa de mu, printed on it, is in red and black colour mix. Another design printed by Tex Styles Ghana Limited at the request of the NDC is on the theme: ‘Papa J’, which also came in red and black colours. Funeral event The burial service for the late former President will be held on Wednesday, January 27. The former President will be laid in state at the Foyer of the Accra International Conference Centre from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from Monday, January 25 to Wednesday, January 27. A mass will be held at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Accra from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 26. The burial service will take place at the Black Star Square in Accra from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 27. Mahama wants Election Petition hearing put on hold
The 2020 presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Mahama is asking the Supreme Court to put all proceedings relating to the Election Petition on hold. The former president is at the Apex court challenging the 2020 election results. The court on Wednesday ordered that Mr Mahama’s team files it’s witness statements by close of day on Thursday. Lead Counsel for the petitioner, Tsatsu Tsikata informed the court they had filed an application urging the court to review its early decision that turned down a request to subject the EC Chairperson to 12 questions. Mr Mahama’s lawyers have on Thursday morning filed another application. This time around, they are asking that the court halts all proceedings relating to the case till it determines their review application. The lawyers argue a serious miscarriage of justice will be occasioned if the court proceeds without a determination of the review application. This they explain will result in irreparable harm that cannot be remedied. The lawyers in the document also remind the court that their request to the Electoral Commission that it admits certain facts has not been complied with. This they explain is needed to finalize the witness statements. Sources within the legal team tell Joy News they have thus not filed the witness statements as directed by the court. CHAN 2020: Masasi stunner rescues two-time winners, DR Congo, at the death
Amadeu Masasi scored a stunner with the last kick of the game to salvage a 1-1 draw for two-time champions DR Congo in their exciting match against Libya at their 2020 Championship of African Nations (CHAN) match in Cameroon on Thursday. Masasi’s piledriver from 30 yards in the 94th minute broke the hearts of the Mediterranean Knights who thought they had secured victory in the Group B match played at the iconic Japoma Stadium in Douala. The stunning strike restored parity after the Libyans led the match for 85 minutes before the Leopards equalized. The Mediterranean Knights raced into the lead when captain Muetaz Husayn Almahdi headed in from a corner in the 5th minute. Libya played out to a goalless draw in their first game of the group against Niger on Sunday and was keen on making a better showing in today’s game to enhance their chance of reaching the knock-out stages of the competition. The former champions hit the ground running in the game and when they had a corner on their first attack in the match, Almahdi was left alone to head in with goalkeeper Nathan Thumu unprotected. The two-time champions responded by piling into the area of the Libyans which put the defenders under pressure and one occasion led to a poor clearance which Fiston Mayele failed to take advantage of with just goalkeeper Ahmed Azzaqa at his mercy. The Al Ahli striker Almahdi could have doubled the lead of his side in the 22nd minute when he burst free from a counter-attack but Leopards goalkeeper was quick off his line to clear to safety. The Congolese continued to search for an opening in the defence of their opponents and in the 28th minute shot Chico Kubanza found himself at the edge of the but his shot wide with the stop-stopper completely beaten. Moments later pacey Congo winger Makabi Lilepo broke from on the left before crossing for the onrushing Mayele but the Libyan goalkeeper made a hash of it at the first attempt before smothering to collect the ball. Four minutes before the break Masasi combined beautifully with Mayele in the box but with the goalkeeper completely beaten, the latter’s final shot came back into play after hitting the upright. The second-half started with the Libyan not showing any signs of giving up on their lead as they went on the attack to put the Congolese on the back foot. Tsumu made two brilliant saves from the efforts of strikers Mohammed Makkari and Rabia Alshadi before Almahdi fired wide from a good chance near the box. Libyan goalkeeper Azzaqa also demonstrated his agility when he dived to tip over Ciel Ikoko’s fierce curling free-kick from the edge of the box on 72 minutes. Substitute Ibrahem Bodabous brought some energy to the attack of the Libyans as he used his trickery to dribble two but the Congolese defenders but a big clearance from Luzolo Sita prevented the North Africans from extending their lead. With the game match edging to a close, the Congolese piled forward and when the Libyans cleared a ball, Masasi popped up with a screamer that the impressive Azzaqa could not save, leaving the Libyans in tears. Libya will play Congo in their final group game at the Japoma Stadium in Douala while DR Congo travels to the capital Yaounde to face Niger in the matches that will be played simultaneously. Who are Neymar’s favourite opponents?
Brazil’s all-time top scorer in UEFA club competition with 41 goals, Neymar continues to score at an impressive rate for Paris, but which teams bring out the best in him? • Neymar failed to score in his first five UEFA Champions League games for Barcelona, but the dam burst on 11 December 2013 when the Brazilian scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 group stage defeat of Celtic at the Camp Nou.Volume 0%00:1201:18 Six great Neymar goals • That first hat-trick was scored inside 15 minutes, Neymar finding the net in the 44th, 48th and 58th minutes. He got his second – and first for Paris – against Crvena zvezda in the 2018/19 competition (20, 22, 81), and struck his third (21, 38, 50) against İstanbul Başakşehir in December 2020. • Statistics suggest that Başakşehir, Celtic and Crvena zvezda are his favourite opponents, though it is easy to see why Paris were so keen to sign him in summer 2017; he had scored seven goals against them in six games for Barcelona. • Neymar has found the net against 17 of the 25 sides he has met in Europe; to date, Napoli and Roma have kept him at bay for the longest: 180 minutes without conceding. • The Brazilian’s scoring rate has improved significantly since he moved to France.
