Possible earthquake to strike Ghana – Dr Ahulu
Ghanaians must prepare for a possible earthquake strike – Dr. Ahulu Ghana must place itself through enforcement of its own codes and standards to deal with any catastrophic earthquake strike in the future in order not to be taken by surprise. “There is still an alarming expectation of another destructive earthquake following this one in the very foreseeable future. This brings to bear the need for the country to position itself in addressing such an eventuality. It is not worthwhile for anybody to be taken by surprise,”. A report, after the 1939 destructive earthquake in Ghana, stated that buildings in Accra, in particular, should not go up vertically beyond two storeys because of the inconsistent geology of Accra and the fact that Accra’s soil profile cannot withstand earthquakes with a high rise building regime. However, with rapid urbanization, engineering solutions and population growth, buildings more than two storeys are springing up within the city. “It is really worrying that these structures are right in the Centre of a well-known seismic zone. This, therefore, makes those buildings vulnerable to the disastrous seismic effect,”. Source: GNA
Five Christians executed by Islamists
Islamist militants executed five Christians in Nigeria over the Christmas period, Release International reports. Terrorist group Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a faction of Boko Haram, has claimed responsibility for the killings. They released a video saying the deaths were a “warning to Christians in all parts of the world and those in Nigeria”. The five executed Christians are understood to have been among 11 people kidnapped on Christmas Day from Garkida town, Adamawa State, in north-east Nigeria. Their deaths were filmed, with footage showing them kneeling with their hands tied behind them before they were shot dead. The victims were all men and were asked to state their names before they were killed. The men gave their names as Uka Joseph, Sunday, Wilson, Joshua Maidugu and Garba Yusuf, but also said as their last words “I am a Christian”, Morning Star News reports. The killings echo a similar execution of 11 Christian aid workers in Nigeria on Christmas Day 2019. In this year’s attack on Garkida town, the militants also set fire to churches, homes and a hospital, and looted shops and houses. “This latest deplorable murder of Christians – just for being Christians – strengthens Release International’s growing concern for Nigeria,” said Release International CEO Paul Robinson. “Boko Haram and ISWAP have both pledged to kill Christians. And heavily armed Fulani militants are driving Christian villagers from the north, in what appears to be an undeclared jihad. Release International’s partners warn of a genocide in the making.” Release partner Hassan John criticised the Nigerian government for failing to stem the violence against Christians. “The government, by design or omission, is turning a blind eye to the carnage,” he said. NPP’s Mac Manu, Jean Mensa testify against Mahama in the election petition
The NPP’s Peter Mac Manu and EC Chairperson Jean Mensa have testified against 2020 NDC Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama’s election petition. Mr Mahama is seeking to annul the results of the election won by the NPP’s Nana Akufo-Addo and have a re-run of the polls. On January 20, the Supreme Court announced January 26 as the date to commence hearing of the substantive aspect of the petition. It also urged the parties in the case to file their respective witness statements. EC’s witness statement The EC statement covers 6 pages and is signed by Jean Mensa. She commences her testimony by stating that the information she’s putting across is from her own knowledge of events leading to the filing of the petition and other matters that have come after. She states that the results of the 2020 elections held on December 7 were collated in accordance with Public Elections Regulations, 2020 (C.I 127). She points out that Nana Akufo-Addo obtained 6,730,413 of the valid votes cast while John Mahama got 6,214,889. She adds that the total valid votes stood at 13,121,111. These figures she asserts shows that Mr Akufo-Addo got more than 50% of the valid votes. She additionally argues that whatever votes remained outstanding at the time of declaration could not mathematically change the more than 50% of valid votes obtained by Mr Akufo-Addo. She admits in her testimony that she inadvertently announced 13,434,574 as of the total valid votes instead of stating this figure as the total number of votes cast. She insists that a simple tabulation of all votes obtained by each candidate as declared comes to 13,121,111. The form declaring the results, Mrs Mensa says was signed by 8 agents of the candidates who were present at the time of the completion of the form. Her inadvertence, she insists did not affect the constrictions threshold of 50% plus 1. The error she explains was immediately corrected the next day by the EC through a statement. On the Techiman South constituency results which were outstanding at the time of declaration, Mrs Mensa says its inclusion or exclusion from the votes obtained by the candidates does not change the outcome of the results. She concludes her testimony by denying claims the Commission padded votes in favour of Nana Akufo-Addo. Peter Mac Manu’s testimony The NPP’s Peter Mac Manu commences his testimony by stating that Nana Akufo-Addo has appointed him to testify on his behalf. He sets off the testimony by saying the petition is without merit and based on unfounded and misconceived assumptions. He explains that the petition does not disclose any attack on the validity of the election held throughout the 38,622 polling stations and 311 special voting centres. He describes the allegations of the wrong aggregation of votes and votes to pad as “empty and collectively involve about 6,622 votes- this is a sum patently insignificant to materially affect the outcome of an election which 2nd respondent defeated Petitioner by well over 500,000 votes. He also states that Mr Mahama does not disclose in the petition the number of valid votes he believes he actually obtained and what Mr Mahama believes Nana Akufo-Addo got to merit a runoff. “The Petition is largely conjectural and borne out of petitioner’s unfounded imagination”, Mr Manu adds. The entire petition he argues is premised on the insignificant accuracies and slips made by the EC Chairperson in her declaration. He insists further that the petition is a ruse and face-saving gimmick deployed by Mr Mahama after the official results declared by the EC and election observers showed he had lost the polls despite claiming victory earlier. He ends by pointing out that he has attached to his statement videos of NDC leaders who had claimed John Mahama won the election by more than 51% of votes casts. He adds that the petition, however, states that no candidate obtained more than 50% of the votes including the candidate said to have won by more than 51%, that is John Mahama. Source: gifttechmedia

Chief Executive Officer of the Atta Mills Institute, Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has shared photos of himself with some former Presidents and current President of Ghana. In the photos, which were shared on his official Twitter page, Mr Anyidoho could be seen in a pose with former President John Agyekum Kufuor, late President Jerry John Rawlings, late President Prof John Evans Atta Mills and current President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Posting the pictures, Mr Anyidoho expressed gratitude to God for the opportunity of getting close to the Presidents of Ghana’s Fourth Republic. Right after posting the pictures, social media was divided. Some social media users wondered why Mr Anyidoho posted the pictures of former Presidents without adding former President John Mahama since he is also an ex-president. While some rebuked him for being unfair to former president Mahama, some also believed he did the right thing by ignoring Mr Mahama. I thank God Almighty that He has gotten me very close to ALL the President's of Ghana's, Fourth Republican dispensation. I forgive the urchins who insult me, but I shall meet some of them in court for the sake of my departed 8 year old daughter. pic.twitter.com/9TEjJV51DV — Samuel Koku Anyidoho🇬🇭 (@KokuAnyidoho) January 23, 2021 Source: adomonline
You can no longer feed off my energy; I’m focused now- Mzbel replies Afia Schwar
Singer Mzbel has subtly reacted to Afia Schwarzenegger’s long list of accusations against her recently. In an Instagram video, the comedienne accused Mzbel of being behind her failed relationships and alleged that she slept with the boss of TV Africa. According to Afia, Mzbel deliberately sabotaged her relationships when she considered her a friend and pointed to Mzbel’s bad parenting skills. Their unending beef was awakened by Mzbel allegedly taking the actress to the Ga traditional court, Naa-Ye-We Wulomo, to kill Afia. Despite Afia’s rant on social media, Mzbel, in a post on Instagram, has refused to be drawn into another scuffle stating that she is done going back and forth with the actress. ”You can no longer feed off my Energy and distract my Positive Vibes. I’m Focused papa ??. Bark all u want, Rant all u can… ME IDGAF! ??@heartman_music and @beljam_recordz to the WORLD!!”, she wrote.
