Attorney General Dominic Ayine Dismisses Corruption Allegations from MP A Plus

Dr. Dominic Ayine, Ghana’s Attorney General and Minister for Justice, has firmly rejected corruption accusations made by Kwame Asare Obeng, famously known as A Plus, the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central.

In a media briefing on Wednesday, April 30, Dr. Ayine stated his willingness to confront and refute the claims made by A Plus, vowing to “walk in the mud” if necessary to defend his reputation.

These allegations surfaced following a Facebook post by A Plus, accusing Dr. Ayine of exploiting the drafting and passage of the Sanitation and Pollution Levy in 2021 for personal gain while in opposition. A Plus claimed that Dr. Ayine manipulated the leadership of the parliamentary committee involved to benefit a close acquaintance and threatened to disclose further corruption if provoked.

Dr. Ayine countered these claims, labelling them as blatant falsehoods. He clarified that he was not involved in the legislative process for the levy, emphasising, “I was not a member of the Finance Committee of Parliament, let alone in a position to influence its composition,” and assured the public he has parliamentary documents to substantiate his statement.

Furthermore, Dr. Ayine highlighted his integrity by stating, “As your Attorney General, I have sufficient reserves of integrity. I have never stolen or accepted a bribe in public office.” He reinforced his credibility, saying, “The President would not have appointed me if there were questions about my integrity.”

Dr. Ayine challenged A Plus to come out from behind social media and present any evidence of wrongdoing, either at a press conference or to the authorities. “If A Plus has any evidence of corruption or thievery against me, I am challenging him today to call a press conference and present it,” he declared.

In a bold move, Dr. Ayine stated, “Let him be warned. In my hometown, we don’t fear mud being thrown. We walk into the mud to deal with the person doing the mudslinging—and I’m ready to walk into the mud with A Plus.”

He also encouraged the media to investigate A Plus’s alleged involvement in the National Service ghost names scandal, suggesting this could be the real motive behind A Plus’s recent attacks.
