Bank of Ghana Reinstates 100 Terminated Employees After Backlash

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has officially reversed its earlier decision to terminate the appointments of more than 100 employees, many of whom were recruited in 2024 under the previous Nana Akufo-Addo administration.

According to Asaase News sources, the management of BoG held a decisive meeting with the affected staff on Thursday, June 26, 2025, and informed them that they are to resume work on Monday, June 30.

📄 Original Termination and Reason

The dismissals were first communicated to the staff via official letters dated June 19, 2025, signed by Mrs Lucy Sasu, Head of the Human Resource and Capacity Development Department.

The letters cited failure to meet probationary requirements as the reason for the terminations:

“In accordance with the terms of your contract of employment, a satisfactory six (6) month probationary period was to be completed. Management regrets to inform you that your appointment cannot be confirmed.”

The notices stated that the appointments would officially end on Monday, June 23, 2025, with one month’s salary paid in lieu of notice. Staff were further instructed to return all official property to HR by the specified date.

🔄 Decision Reversed After Internal Review

The reversal comes amid growing concern over what observers have described as a wave of politically motivated dismissals in public institutions following the change in government in January 2025.

Though BoG has not released an official public statement on the reversal, internal sources suggest that legal, reputational, and administrative implications may have influenced the decision.

Affected employees expressed relief upon receiving the reinstatement directive, especially as many were uncertain about their career prospects after the abrupt termination.

💬 What Happens Next?

All affected staff have been instructed to return to their roles on June 30, with no loss of accumulated service time expected. However, it is unclear whether new probationary assessments or fresh performance reviews will be initiated upon their return.

Observers within Ghana’s public sector believe this move could signal a more cautious approach to post-election restructuring in state institutions going forward.

The BoG has yet to issue an official public announcement on the reinstatements.
