BECE: Education minister presses WAEC for early release of results to ease student anxiety

Ghana’s Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has appealed to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to ensure the timely release of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results to reduce the growing anxiety among students and parents nationwide.

Timely Results to Ease Anxiety

Speaking at the 2025 WAEC Distinction Awards Ceremony held on June 26, the Minister praised WAEC for the smooth execution of this year’s BECE but stressed the importance of swift result publication.

“Let me commend you for a very successful BECE examination. What we expect from you now is the early, timely release of the results so that anxiety among students will go down,” he stated.

Delays in result publication have long been a concern for stakeholders in the education sector, often causing disruptions in school placements and academic progression.

Ghana Scholarship Authority Bill to Tackle Nepotism

During the same event, the Minister also announced his intention to present the Ghana Scholarship Authority Bill to Parliament in the coming weeks. The bill, he explained, is part of President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to reform the scholarship system by eliminating favoritism and promoting transparency.

“In a few weeks to come, I will introduce the Ghana Scholarship Authority Bill to Parliament on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, as he promised Ghanaians to deal with the issue of nepotism that was associated with the award of scholarships,” the Minister said.

The new legislation is expected to create a structured, merit-based scholarship framework, ensuring deserving students across the country receive the financial support they need for their education.

A Step Forward for Ghana’s Education System

Both the call for expedited BECE results and the planned scholarship reform reflect the government’s renewed focus on building a more equitable and responsive education sector.

As Ghana continues to prioritize student welfare and academic excellence, these initiatives signal a future where merit and fairness form the foundation of educational advancement.
