Social network Bluesky has launched an exciting update, incorporating features beloved by former X users, but no, it still doesn’t include an edit button! Instead, the open social network now supports chat reactions in direct messages and has transformed its search functionality into an “Explore” page, helping users discover trends, suggested accounts, Starter Packs, and more.
These new elements take a cue from X, which enabled emoji reactions to direct messages back in 2020 and later expanded the options beyond the default set. Bluesky now offers a similar experience, allowing users to click on the emoji button next to a message to add a reaction. Initially, common emojis like hearts, thumbs up, eyes, sad faces, and laughing faces are available, but users can select from a wider variety by clicking the three-dot menu, much like on X.
The refreshed Bluesky Explore page is designed to enhance user engagement by highlighting trending topics on the network. This feature becomes even more relevant with Bluesky’s growing community of over 34 million users, making it easier to identify popular discussions and trends.
Current trends on Bluesky include significant events like Trump’s tariffs and their impact, as well as popular groups such as BookSky readers. Trends are conveniently labeled “New,” “Hot,” or with a timestamp like “5h ago,” to indicate their status.
Moreover, the redesigned Explore page offers users the opportunity to personalize their experience by inputting their interests. It also recommends accounts to follow across various categories, including Art, Sports, Music, Comics, Politics, Science, News, Animals, Books, and Video Games.
Below, users can explore curated Starter Packs, which are collections of suggested users to follow, and popular custom feeds such as NFL+, connecting fans of American football.
Earlier this week, Bluesky CTO Paul Frazee credited Darrin Loeliger, a recent hire, for the improved Explore page, acknowledging the benefits of adding a designer to the team.
These updates, though seemingly minor, could entice former X users by offering familiar tools for engaging with friends and discovering new discussions, people, and interests on Bluesky.
