CAF Announces Increased Prize Money for WAFCON 2024

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has significantly raised the financial stakes for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), confirming that the tournament winners will now pocket a grand prize of $1 million.

According to CAF, this bump in prize money is part of a broader effort to reward excellence and encourage the growth of women’s football across the continent. The runners-up will earn $500,000, while the team finishing in third place will receive $350,000. All twelve participating nations will also benefit from increased appearance bonuses.


Tournament Format and Groups

Twelve nations will vie for continental glory in this year’s WAFCON, hosted in Morocco. The group stage has been structured as follows:

  • Group A: Morocco (hosts), Zambia, Senegal, DR Congo

  • Group B: Nigeria, Tunisia, Botswana, Algeria

  • Group C: South Africa (defending champions), Ghana, Mali, Tanzania


Opening Fixtures and Key Matchups

The competition gets underway this Saturday, with the host nation, Atlas Lionesses of Morocco, facing Zambia’s Copper Queens.

On Sunday, Nigeria’s Super Falcons, the most decorated team in WAFCON history with nine titles, will start their campaign against Tunisia in Casablanca.

Banyana Banyana of South Africa, the current titleholders, are set to begin their title defence against Ghana’s Black Queens on Monday.
