Yaw Asani Tano, the National Organizer for the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), has publicly demanded the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo. He accuses her of failing to maintain the neutrality required in her judicial role during the previous administration, suggesting this justifies her removal.
Tano argues that setting such precedents is acceptable, even if it means future governments might adopt similar actions. He stated, “If Torkornoo is removed, it would not be a problem for that to become the norm. The NPP has already established this precedent.” He further claimed that without her removal, efforts to combat corruption and crime would be hindered.
His comments were made on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo during a panel on April 9, 2025.
In response to petitions for her removal, Chief Justice Torkornoo submitted her official reply to President John Dramani Mahama and the Council of State on April 7, 2025, meeting the 10-day deadline imposed by the president.
With her response now filed, the Council of State is set to review the petitions to determine if there is a substantial case for further proceedings. Justice Torkornoo had initially requested more time to respond to the three separate petitions, aligning with due process.
