Calls for Removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo Intensify

The National Organiser of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Yaw Asani Tano, has expressed strong opinions regarding Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo, advocating for her removal from office. Tano argues that during the previous government’s administration, the Chief Justice failed to maintain the impartiality expected from her position in the judiciary. He believes that her removal is justified and should not be seen as problematic even if it becomes a norm for future governments.

Tano stated, “When it comes to the removal of Torkornoo, she has to go. She has no basis for staying in that position.” He suggested that if a future government decides to remove key judicial figures like the Chief Justice or the Electoral Commissioner, it should be acceptable, citing a precedent already set by the NPP. According to Tano, the Chief Justice’s perceived inaction during her tenure impedes the fight against crime and corruption.

In response to the petitions seeking her removal, Chief Justice Torkornoo officially submitted her answers to President John Dramani Mahama and the Council of State on April 7, 2025, complying with the president’s 10-day deadline. Reports indicate that the Council of State will soon review the submission to determine if there is a prima facie case for further proceedings.

Initially, President Mahama granted Justice Torkornoo 10 working days to respond to the three petitions for her removal. On March 27, 2025, she requested copies of the petitions and asked for a minimum of seven days to prepare her response, adhering to due process.
