Defence Minister Calls for Calm Amid Election Rerun Violence in Ablekuma North
The Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has urged Ghanaians to uphold peace during the ongoing election rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency, following a disturbing incident of violence.
This appeal comes in the wake of a clash at the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station, where former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, was allegedly assaulted. The altercation raised concerns about security and voter safety in the affected area.
Dr. Boamah, who visited the scene with Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak, strongly condemned the violence and emphasized the need for a peaceful and democratic process.
“This is a civil exercise, and we are not at war,” he stated during a media briefing.
“What happened at Ayawaso West Wuogon should never happen again. This election must be peaceful, and citizens must feel safe to vote.”
The Minister further assured the public that the Ghana Police Service is fully equipped to handle any disturbances and ensure order throughout the electoral process.
“Any challenges will be addressed by the Ghana Police Service. Trust that they will act accordingly,” he affirmed.
The rerun is taking place across 19 polling stations in the constituency, and the Defence Minister’s call highlights the government’s commitment to protecting the democratic rights of citizens and avoiding a repeat of past election-related violence.
