Fight against galamsey: Government to deploy AI for real-time monitoring of all forest areas – Minister of Environment

The Ghanaian government is set to adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to monitor and manage forest areas in real time, aiming to combat illegal mining activities. The Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Murtala Mohammed, made this announcement during an interview on GTV’s Breakfast Show, highlighting the potential of this technology to revolutionize forest surveillance without needing physical presence in these areas.

This AI initiative is a vital component of a larger strategy to address the environmental and economic threats posed by illegal mining, known locally as galamsey. The minister voiced concerns over the significant damage these activities inflict on the environment, farmlands, and water bodies. He especially noted the risks to Ghana’s cocoa industry, which could suffer contamination from harmful chemicals like mercury, leading to reputational damage and potential blacklisting in international markets.

Mohammed also addressed the growing security risks associated with illegal mining, mentioning that some miners are armed and pose a threat to forest guards. He described the situation as not just an environmental crisis but a security and diplomatic issue as well. Despite successful efforts to reclaim nine forest reserves through intelligence and security operations, he acknowledged the continual challenge posed by illegal miners who relocate frequently.

The deployment of AI is seen as a game changer, offering the ability to conduct ongoing real-time surveillance and alert security forces when illegal activities are detected. This proactive approach aims to deter illegal miners who often elude traditional monitoring methods.

Lastly, the minister emphasized the need for greater involvement from traditional and religious leaders in this battle. Their collaboration is deemed critical in safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources and securing a sustainable future for the country.
