Galamsey Could Cost Government 2028 Elections Warning

Galamsey could cost government 2028 elections

Political scientist Dr. Kwame Asah Asante has cautioned that galamsey could cost government 2028 elections if strong measures are not taken to address the menace. He explained that the government’s slow response to illegal mining has led to growing frustration among Ghanaians who are directly affected by its devastating environmental and economic consequences.

Speaking on JoyNews, Dr. Asah Asante emphasized that illegal mining continues to destroy farmlands, contaminate water bodies, and threaten livelihoods across several communities. He stated that citizens are increasingly questioning the government’s commitment to protecting natural resources and future generations.

According to him, these issues could significantly influence voter behavior in the next general elections, as the public may use their votes to express disappointment. He added that when policies fail to bring real change, the electorate tends to hold leaders accountable through the ballot box.

Dr. Asah Asante therefore urged the government to adopt a more consistent and transparent strategy to eliminate galamsey. He noted that a clear demonstration of political will, combined with community involvement, is the only way to restore public confidence.

He warned that the government risks losing voter trust if the fight against illegal mining continues to appear ineffective. A renewed commitment to enforcing environmental laws and protecting citizens’ welfare, he said, could determine the outcome of the 2028 elections.

Experts believe that addressing galamsey comprehensively would not only save Ghana’s environment but also strengthen the government’s credibility among citizens seeking responsible leadership.
