Ghana–Savannah Collaboration Powers Sustainable Transit Shift
Accra is on track to transform its public transport system through a landmark agreement with Savannah, Georgia. This city-to-city alliance will bring electric buses in Accra, positioning the capital as a leader in sustainable urban mobility. Spearheaded by Savannah-based investors and backed by Hyundai electric bus procurement, this project reflects a broader commitment to eco-friendly infrastructure.
Historic Visit Seals Electric Transport Deal
During a high-level visit to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Savannah Mayor Van R. Johnson II led a U.S. delegation that included Dwayne Stevens, former chair of the Metropolitan Planning Commission; Marty Johnson, the mayor’s deputy assistant; and Dr. Joseph Silver Sr., president of Silver and Associates. The tour, which also took them to Kumasi and Cape Coast, concluded in Accra—what Mayor Johnson warmly described as “saving the best for last.”
Accra Mayor Highlights Local Benefits
Accra’s Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, stressed that the electric buses in Accra will do more than just lower fares and reduce emissions. Their introduction is expected to attract more riders, thanks to the new technology, and create jobs across the transportation sector. This initiative marks a significant step forward in combining environmental priorities with socio-economic gains.
Savannah’s Support Anchors a Broader Vision
Mayor Johnson praised the collaboration, calling it a testament to shared heritage and forward-thinking leadership. The formal partnership, signed in February 2024, is Savannah’s first international city agreement with an African counterpart. The deal extends beyond transport to include education, cultural exchange, tourism, and urban planning.
He noted that with the political mandate from winning all 53 precincts in his city, there is strong backing for the partnership. “We have a shared history and a shared lineage,” he said, emphasizing mutual progress through unity.
Global Partnerships Fuel Local Impact
This agreement sets a precedent for how international cooperation between cities can tackle shared urban challenges. As Accra welcomes its first fleet of electric buses, it not only modernizes public transportation but also lights the way for other African cities to embrace green, inclusive development.
