Awula Serwaa has warned that shoot to kill illegal miners cannot be an acceptable policy for Ghana. She stressed that Ghana is not a jungle and that the fight against illegal mining must follow the rule of law.
She stated that killings would violate human rights and increase unrest in mining areas. Offenders, she noted, should face court trials instead of violent punishment.
Awula Serwaa proposed that government declare a state of emergency over forest reserves and water bodies. She added that illegal miners could be given 24 hours to leave, after which the law should take its course.
She urged leaders to protect the environment without losing sight of human dignity. While some demand harsher action against galamsey, she emphasized that due process remains the only just solution.
