Ghana partners with Cisco on coders

Ghana partners with Cisco on coders certification in a new collaboration aimed at strengthening the government’s digital skills initiative. The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations announced that Cisco will provide certification pathways and learning resources to learners enrolled in the One Million Coders Programme. This partnership is intended to raise the quality and global recognition of Ghana’s digital workforce.

During talks between Minister Samuel Nartey George and Cisco representatives led by Imoh Akpan, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to develop scalable digital skills across Ghana. Cisco will help create certification tracks in areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cybersecurity, Data Forensics, and Cloud Computing to support the national agenda. The move is expected to deepen Ghana’s integration into the global technology ecosystem.

As part of the collaboration, the government plans to set up digital hubs in all 276 constituencies, each furnished with around 50 computers and reliable internet access. These hubs will be open to youth, particularly in rural areas, providing access to devices, connectivity, and training opportunities. The objective is to ensure no region is left behind in Ghana’s digital transformation.

The Ministry also outlined plans for Cisco to formalize the agreement via a proposal and expression of interest. It emphasized that the partnership aligns with Ghana’s broader digital transformation priorities, which include extending AI to governance and promoting innovation in every region. Officials say the collaboration will complement existing partnerships with tech giants like Google, Microsoft, AWS, and Huawei.

Observers believe this step could significantly enhance Ghana’s competitiveness in the global tech market. By offering credible certification and equipping learners with in-demand skills, the country may attract more investment and create stronger talent pipelines. However, success depends on effective execution: infrastructure, stable power, mentor networks, and sustaining training quality will be crucial.
