Thomas Musah Tanko, the General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), has voiced concerns about a recent directive halting contract extensions for retirees in the public sector. He emphasized the need for continued engagement with retirees, either through two-year extensions or consultant roles, to facilitate a smooth transition of organizational knowledge in the absence of a formal succession plan in the civil service.
Highlighting the importance of retaining organizational memory, Musah Tanko argued on TV3’s “Key Points” that engaging retirees as consultants is crucial. This approach, he believes, will prevent the loss of valuable experience that retiring employees contribute to their organizations.
While Musah Tanko assured that labor supports the retirement age of 60, he urged for a comprehensive discussion on the recent suspension of post-retirement contracts to avoid potential issues arising from its implementation.
Background
The directive, dated April 2, 2025, originated from the Office of the President, announcing the immediate suspension of contract appointments for retired public service staff. Signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to the President, the statement clarified that requests for such appointments will no longer be considered.
