Inusah Fuseini to Suspended CJ Torkornoo: “Public Commentary Isn’t the Right Remedy”

Public Commentary Not the Solution – Inusah Fuseini Criticizes CJ Torkornoo’s Media Address

Prominent legal practitioner and former Tamale Central MP, Inusah Fuseini, has publicly criticized suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo for holding a press conference while an official inquiry into her potential removal is still in progress.

The critique follows Justice Torkornoo’s media address, where she expressed concerns over alleged procedural flaws and threats to her personal safety amid the impeachment proceedings.

🎙️ “She Should’ve Gone to Court, Not the Media” – Fuseini

In an interview with Channel One Newsroom, Mr. Fuseini argued that the Chief Justice should have pursued justice through the courts rather than taking her grievances to the press.

“If one alleges there is a violation of the right to a fair hearing, the solution is not a press conference,” he stated.
“Least of all, the Chief Justice herself should know that the High Court is the appropriate forum to vindicate such rights.”

He added that such public engagements, particularly from someone in the country’s highest judicial position, risk undermining the credibility of the constitutional and legal processes underway.

Context: Suspension and Impeachment

Justice Torkornoo has been on suspension since April 22, 2025, after President John Dramani Mahama, following consultations with the Council of State, established a prima facie case against her based on three separate petitions.

The impeachment process is being carried out under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, with a five-member committee currently reviewing the case.

🛑 A Warning Against Undermining the Judiciary

Fuseini’s comments echo broader concerns among legal experts and politicians who believe the Chief Justice’s public pronouncements could erode confidence in the judiciary and the constitutional process.

As the proceedings continue, he urged all parties, especially Justice Torkornoo, to respect legal protocols and refrain from public actions that may prejudice the outcome.

“The law provides avenues for redress. That is where she should focus her energy,” he concluded.
