Mahama opens Ghana transport and logistics fair

Mahama opens Ghana transport and logistics fair in Accra, marking the launch of a pivotal three-day exhibition designed to reshape the country’s mobility and supply-chain infrastructure. President John Dramani Mahama declared the event under the theme “Resetting Ghana’s Transport Sector for Improved Connectivity, Innovation and Investment,” inviting stakeholders across roads, rail, maritime and aviation to collaborate.

During his address, the president emphasised that transportation is critical to economic performance, noting that efficient movement of people and goods unlocks markets, drives productivity and fosters inclusive development. He said the government would expand mass-transport services and introduce a robust regulatory regime for motorbikes and tricycles, all within a framework prioritising safety, orderliness and sustainability.

The fair, attended by various ministries, private-sector players and security agencies, features demonstrations of vehicles, logistics systems and digital platforms that aim to overhaul Ghana’s transport ecosystem. The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, announced that long-term projects are underway, including upgrading the Kotoka International Airport, rehabilitating the Tema harbour breakwater, and resuming work on the western rail line.

Mahama also highlighted Ghana’s ambition to become a regional logistics hub under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He asserted that transforming Ghana’s transport and logistics sector would require private-sector investment, policy coherence and strong leadership. “This fair is a bold statement of intent,” he said, urging every stakeholder to commit to the national agenda.

Experts welcomed the event as timely, pointing out that decades of project delays and inefficient transport systems have hindered growth. They cautioned, however, that success will depend on consistent implementation, transparent procurement and a clear monitoring framework — without which the promised transformation may falter.
