In a recent development, telecommunications powerhouse MTN Group announced a cybersecurity breach that resulted in unauthorized access to customer data in several countries where the company operates. While MTN has not yet specified which countries are affected, it has reassured users that its core systems and financial platforms are secure and uncompromised.
No Evidence of Customer Account Compromise
An official statement released on April 24, 2025, revealed that an unknown third party claims to have infiltrated parts of MTN’s systems. However, the company emphasized that there is currently no evidence to suggest that customer accounts and mobile money (MoMo) wallets have been directly affected.
“An unknown third party has claimed to have accessed data linked to parts of our systems,” the company stated. “At this stage, we do not have any information to suggest that customers’ accounts and wallets have been directly compromised.”
Proactive Response and Collaboration with Authorities
MTN responded swiftly by activating its cybersecurity protocols and notifying relevant law enforcement agencies, including the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks). The authorities in the impacted countries have also been informed, and MTN is actively participating in ongoing investigations.
Customer Notifications and Security Advice
The company is in the process of notifying affected customers in accordance with local legal and regulatory requirements. Additionally, MTN issued general guidance on how customers can safeguard their information amidst the breach.
“Customers are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow regular security measures,” the statement advised. MTN urged users to:
– Use strong, unique passwords
– Watch out for suspicious messages or links
– Avoid disclosing sensitive information like passwords, PINs, and OTPs
– Activate multi-factor authentication where possible
Commitment to Transparency and Security
MTN reiterated its dedication to transparency and customer protection, emphasizing that data privacy remains a top priority.
“We will continue to contain and manage this matter carefully,” MTN assured. “We are committed to safeguarding the integrity of our systems and maintaining the trust placed in us by our customers and stakeholders.”
