Narendra Modi to Receive Ghana’s Highest State Honour on Historic Visit

🇮🇳 Ghana to Honor Narendra Modi with Companion of the Order of the Star of Ghana

In a historic diplomatic gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India will be awarded Ghana’s highest national honour—the Companion of the Order of the Star of Ghana—during a two-day state visit beginning July 2, 2025.

This prestigious recognition will be conferred by President John Dramani Mahama at a state banquet, as announced by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs during a press briefing today.

“Prime Minister Modi joins a distinguished group of world leaders recognised for their role in fostering global unity and bilateral cooperation,” the Minister remarked.

🌍 Celebrating a Historic Ghana-India Bond

Modi’s trip marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 30 years, symbolizing a renewed commitment to the over 60-year-old diplomatic relationship between the two nations.

Ghana and India’s bond traces back to the era of Kwame Nkrumah and Jawaharlal Nehru, whose pioneering roles in founding the Non-Aligned Movement helped shape peaceful diplomacy during the Cold War.

🏛️ Key Events on Modi’s Itinerary

  • Parliamentary Address: Modi will deliver a speech to Ghana’s Parliament on Thursday, July 3 at 10:00 a.m., a significant moment in Ghana’s diplomatic history.

  • Community Engagement: He will engage with the Indian diaspora in Ghana and pay tribute at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

  • State Banquet & Honour Ceremony: Modi will receive the Companion of the Order of the Star of Ghana, joining other notable honourees such as William Ruto, Jacques Chirac, Alassane Ouattara, and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

🤝 Bilateral Talks & Agreements

Ghana and India will also hold strategic bilateral talks, with several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) expected to be signed, including:

  • Formation of a Joint Commission

  • Collaborations in health, agriculture, and defence

  • A key agreement between the Institute of Traditional and Alternative Medicine and the University of Ghana

  • Support for Ghana’s ambition to become Africa’s vaccine hub

“India has pledged full backing for Ghana’s vaccine manufacturing vision,” the Foreign Affairs Minister affirmed.

📈 Strengthening Economic & Trade Partnerships

Trade remains a key pillar of Ghana-India relations:

  • Current trade volume stands at $3 billion, recovering from a pre-COVID peak of $4.5 billion.

  • Ghana enjoys a positive trade balance, largely driven by gold exports.

India has historically contributed to Ghana’s education, healthcare, infrastructure, and capacity-building through scholarships, training, and technical cooperation.

“This visit is about deepening an already warm, cooperative relationship built on shared values and mutual respect,” the Minister noted.
