The popular streaming platform, Netflix, may find its own futuristic stories akin to “Black Mirror” through its innovative approach to enhancing user experience. According to a recent Bloomberg report, Netflix has introduced a cutting-edge AI search engine, powered by OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, offering subscribers a more advanced way to search for content.
This newly launched tool elevates traditional search functionalities beyond straightforward queries like titles, genres, or actors. Instead, it introduces the ability to search by various other criteria, including mood, allowing users to leverage natural language for a more intuitive interaction.
Artificial intelligence is not entirely new territory for the streaming giant. Netflix already employs AI to fuel its recommendation algorithms, personalizing content for users based on their viewing history. However, the expansion into AI-driven search marks a significant technological stride.
Despite this technological advancement, Netflix is mindful of the concerns creatives have regarding AI’s role in the entertainment industry. The company has reassured that AI will not be used as a replacement for filmmakers, screenwriters, or actors.
Currently in a testing phase, the AI search feature is exclusively available to a select group of iOS users in Australia and New Zealand. Only those who opt-in can explore this tool’s capabilities. Netflix plans to broaden access to other regions, including the U.S., shortly.
