The General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has expressed strong criticism towards the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) officers for allegedly disregarding due process in their recent attempt to invite a Member of Parliament for questioning.
This follows an incident where NIB operatives stormed the residence of Assin South MP and Ranking Member on Parliament’s Interior and Defence Committee, Rev Ntim Fordjour, to execute an arrest warrant.
Speaking to the press at the MP’s home, Mr. Kodua described the chaos that ensued as “needless and unwarranted,” emphasizing that Ghana is governed by the rule of law, not the rule of men. He argued that proper legal procedures should have been adhered to when inviting a sitting Member of Parliament.
He further questioned whether the constitutional provisions for inviting an MP were followed, stating, “The first question we want to ask the current administration is: Was that process followed? The answer is no.”
Mr. Kodua criticized the authorities for not officially notifying the Speaker of Parliament to request the MP’s appearance before any security agency, as required by constitutional guidelines. He condemned the “rambo-style” approach taken by the NIB, calling it unnecessary and inappropriate.
Rev Ntim Fordjour has alleged that two aircraft recently landed in Ghana under suspicious circumstances, claiming they were involved in money laundering and illicit drug trafficking. He has urged the government to investigate the matter and provide clarity to the public.
In response, Felix Kwakye-Ofosu, the government’s spokesperson, refuted the allegations, describing them as false. He explained that the aircraft landed due to minor technical issues and other legitimate reasons.
The incident has heightened political tension between the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition NPP, with both parties exchanging accusations over the matter.
