The National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has issued a stark warning regarding the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by the current administration led by President John Dramani Mahama.
In his remarks on Channel One TV, on May 3rd, Mustapha labeled the suspension as “crude” and suggested it undermines the judiciary’s independence. He argued that this decision might set a precedent where the role of Chief Justice becomes vulnerable to political shifts.
“Whether or not President Mahama seeks a third term, this approach surely seems politically motivated rather than a commitment to legal procedures,” Mustapha commented during the interview, emphasizing that the politicalization of this judicial office risks making it synonymous with the ruling party’s interests.
Mustapha did not mince words when he expressed that an NPP government might respond in kind under future administrations. He indicated that any Chief Justice appointed during Mahama’s presidency could face removal when the NPP assumes power again.
The discourse on this issue highlights ongoing political tensions and the potential impacts on judicial independence in the country.
