President John Mahama Advocates for Global Accountability and Reparative Justice for Africa

On Africa Day 2025, President John Mahama delivered a powerful call to action, urging for global accountability and reparative justice to address the lasting impacts of slavery, colonialism, and neo-colonialism on the African continent and its diaspora.

President Mahama emphasized the long-standing effects of exploitation, dispossession, and structural inequalities that continue to hinder the progress of Africans and those of African descent. “The legacy of slavery, colonialism, and neo-colonial exploitation has lingered for too long, overshadowing the lives and advancements of Africans,” he remarked.

Highlighting the need for reparations, he explained, “Reparations go beyond financial compensation; they involve acknowledging the profound and enduring harm inflicted upon our communities.”

As the African Union’s representative leading the reparations initiative, Mahama reaffirmed his dedication to uniting African leaders, institutions, and diaspora communities in this shared mission. “I am deeply committed to collaborating with you all to achieve this vital goal,” he stated.

President Mahama urged the importance of confronting historical injustices and taking meaningful actions to correct them. Central to his vision is the establishment of a justice framework that demands formal apologies from former colonial powers and benefiting institutions.

“We seek justice—a justice that includes a range of measures, such as official apologies from nations and institutions responsible for these wrongs,” Mahama declared.

This call to action resonates as a pivotal step toward healing and empowering African communities worldwide, reflecting a commitment to rectify historical injustices and forge a path toward equitable progress.
