President Mahama Pledges Completion of Abandoned Projects Across Ashanti Region by 2029

A Renewed Commitment to Continuity and Infrastructure Growth

During his recent ‘Thank You’ tour in Kumasi, President John Mahama reaffirmed a major campaign promise: President Mahama pledges completion of abandoned projects across the Ashanti Region by the end of his tenure in 2029. He emphasized that viable projects, regardless of which administration started them, will not be left unfinished under his leadership.

“We are a government of continuity and results,” he told supporters, reinforcing his commitment to national unity through development.

Key Projects Set for Completion in the Ashanti Region

The list of targeted infrastructure projects includes the Kejetia Market Phase II, Krofro Market, Mamponteng Market, and the Suame Interchange. The government also aims to complete the Afari Military Hospital, Sewua Regional Hospital, and the maternity block at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

In addition, plans are in place to upgrade the Baba Yara Sports Stadium and further develop the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Medical Centre—all aimed at revitalizing health, commerce, and sports infrastructure in the region.

The ‘Big Push’ Agenda to Bridge Infrastructure Deficit

To address the World Bank’s estimated $1.5 billion annual infrastructure gap, President Mahama’s administration is rolling out the ‘Big Push’ initiative. With a $10 billion budget over five years, the program targets critical infrastructure upgrades designed to unlock economic productivity and improve regional integration.

Greater Kumasi Bypass to Ease Urban Congestion

One of the flagship projects under this plan is the Greater Kumasi Bypass, which will divert heavy-duty trucks from Kumasi’s city center. The initial phase connects Ejisu to the Mampong and Techiman roads, helping to reduce congestion, improve safety, and preserve urban infrastructure. This announcement was met with overwhelming support during the president’s address.

Regional Road Upgrades to Boost Connectivity

Road construction plans also include routes connecting Tepa, Manso, and Adansi, designed to enhance trade routes and mobility for surrounding communities.

Expanding Kumasi’s Aviation and Expressway Network

In the aviation sector, contractors have begun preparations to extend the runway at Prempeh International Airport, enabling larger aircraft to land. This move is expected to transform Kumasi into an international travel and investment hub.

Meanwhile, the Accra-Kumasi Expressway is in advanced planning stages, with feasibility studies and designs nearly complete. Unlike the existing dualisation project, this new expressway will feature three lanes in each direction, reduce travel time by 50 kilometers, and include rest stops and fueling stations. It will be a toll-based project aimed at generating revenue for its own maintenance.

Reassurance and Gratitude to the Ashanti Region

President Mahama concluded by thanking the people of the Ashanti Region—traditionally a stronghold of the opposition—for their trust in his leadership. He promised an equitable distribution of resources and urged continued regional support to fully realize his government’s development vision.
