Afenyo-Markin’s Call to Youth
The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has urged Ghanaian youth to reject corruption resist division demand accountability. He said young people must defend integrity, unity, and responsibility to secure Ghana’s future.
Rejecting Division and Corruption
At the University of Education, Winneba, during the Young Commons Forum (YCF), Afenyo-Markin explained that whenever corruption or division appears, youth must resist it. Choosing unity, he added, strengthens Ghana’s social fabric. Speaking against nepotism and injustice also proves that the next generation will not tolerate practices that block progress.
Purpose of the Young Commons Forum
The second YCF event followed the first at the University of Professional Studies, Accra. According to Afenyo-Markin, the forum bridges theory and practice while preparing students for leadership and employment. During the session, a six-member interim executive, led by Emmanuel Osei, was sworn in.
Accountability and Integrity in Daily Life
He challenged students to practice honesty and transparency in all roles—student leadership, volunteering, national service, and business. Accountability, he stressed, is not only demanded from leaders but must also be embraced by every citizen.
Education Beyond the Classroom
Education, he argued, must not stop at classroom learning. Policymakers should remove barriers and create real opportunities for the youth. He also called for a curriculum that promotes project-based learning, civic engagement, community problem solving, and global exposure.
Youth, Innovation, and Economic Growth
Looking ahead, Afenyo-Markin urged young people to focus on innovation, technology, digital creativity, and value addition. Government and private sector cooperation, he added, is needed to support entrepreneurs with access to capital and space to innovate.
Warning Against Political Retaliation
He further criticized the “you do me, I do you” style of political revenge, warning that it blocks national development. Youth must hold leaders accountable but also show integrity by avoiding the misuse of opportunities.
The Role of Mentorship
The event’s chairman, UEW lecturer Eric Nketia, stressed the importance of mentorship. He encouraged leaders to guide young people and prepare them for future leadership roles.
