The GTEC suspends processing from UCC after directing the University of Cape Coast to comply with the compulsory retirement of its Vice-Chancellor. All requests related to accreditation, government subvention, research funding, financial clearance, and contracts have been frozen.
A letter dated 22 September 2025 was sent by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission to the Registrar of UCC. This followed an earlier communication on 19 September 2025. GTEC stated that the university failed to enforce the retirement directive for Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong.
The Vice-Chancellor has not stepped down, despite hitting the statutory retirement age of 60. In response, GTEC instructed the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto, to act in the interim.
GTEC referred to Article 199(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which sets compulsory retirement for public officers at age 60. It also cited the University of Cape Coast Act, 1992 (PNDCL 278), and Statute 8.2 of the UCC Statutes, which align with this retirement requirement.
Prof. Boampong, through his lawyers, argued that UCC Statutes and a High Court injunction allow him to continue in office. He maintains that contract extension and rollover clauses give him legal grounds to stay on.
