Wontumi Granted GH₵1M Bail Over Galamsey Charges
Wontumi granted GH₵1M bail over galamsey charges after appearing before investigators in Accra. The Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, met the GH₵1 million bail with two sureties.
The CID invited him on Monday, October 6, 2025, to answer questions about his alleged role in illegal mining. Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine had warned he would face arrest if he ignored the summons.
Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, said his client is cooperating fully with investigators. He stated that the team will resist any move to cancel the bail.
Court officials will file new mining-related charges against Wontumi on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at the High Court in Accra. The case adds pressure to Ghana’s efforts to stop galamsey and protect natural resources.
Many observers see the case as a test of Ghana’s resolve to fight illegal mining. Environmental groups continue to call for strong enforcement to preserve rivers and forests from destruction.
