Chief Choongo, Chairperson of Zambia’s House of Chiefs, has issued a strong appeal to royal families across the country to withdraw succession disputes from the formal court system and instead pursue resolution through traditional governance structures.
In a recent interview, Chief Choongo emphasized that issues of royal succession are deeply rooted in lineage, heritage, and cultural customs, making them more appropriate for mediation by district councils of chiefs rather than the conventional judicial system.
“Let Chiefs Resolve Their Own Issues”
The call comes amid increasing instances of royal succession battles being dragged into Zambia’s courtrooms, often resulting in prolonged legal disputes and strained relationships within royal families.
“We have district councils of chiefs that are well-versed in customary practices. These councils are better suited to handle disputes grounded in our traditions,” Chief Choongo stated.
He specifically pointed to districts like Monze, where multiple royal households coexist, noting that these councils have a proven capacity to preserve cultural continuity and prevent external interference.
Preserving Traditional Authority
Chief Choongo warned that resorting to state courts undermines the legitimacy and authority of traditional institutions, weakening the very structures that have held communities together for generations.
“When royal families take their matters to court, it diminishes the power of our traditions and casts doubt on the leadership of our chiefs,” he added.
His remarks align with a broader movement to strengthen indigenous governance systems, ease pressure on Zambia’s formal legal system, and promote community-based conflict resolution.

The House of Chiefs is encouraging royal families to recognize the value of traditional arbitration, which is not only faster and more culturally sensitive but also maintains community harmony and spiritual balance—elements often overlooked in legal proceedings.
