๐ŸŒŽ Momentum Builds for Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty as COP30 Approaches

As the world looks ahead to COP30 in Brazil, a growing coalition of international lawmakers is calling on global leaders to adopt bold, legally binding commitments to end fossil fuel dependenceโ€”the root cause of the climate crisis.

At a webinar organized by the Womenโ€™s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN), held during the Global Womenโ€™s Assembly for Climate Justice, influential parliamentarians raised alarm over the increasing influence of fossil fuel lobbyists and the stagnation of global climate policy.

They urged immediate support for the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, which proposes to:

  • Stop expansion of fossil fuel projects

  • Phase out existing production fairly

  • Ensure a just transition for affected communities and workers

๐ŸŒฑ Women Lawmakers Lead the Global Push for Climate Justice

The session featured voices from around the world:

  • Senator Cecilia Requena (Bolivia)

  • Senator Rosa Galvez (Canada)

  • MP Nusrat Hanje (Tanzania)

  • MP Zali Steggall (Australia)

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Boliviaโ€™s Bold Step

Senator Cecilia Requena shared Boliviaโ€™s efforts to protect the Amazon with a draft law aimed at restricting hydrocarbon activities in the region.

โ€œWe must balance development needs with biodiversity protection. We need solutions for both the Amazon and its people,โ€ she said.

๐ŸŒ A Treaty for Global Accountability

Tzeporah Berman, Chair of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, highlighted a gap in climate policy:

โ€œFossil fuels are responsible for 86% of global emissions, yet have remained largely untouched in international agreements. This treaty is the missing piece.โ€

๐Ÿ”ฅ Climate Change Impacts Felt Globally

From Africa to Oceania, lawmakers shared the devastating effects of climate change:

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ Australia: โ€œA Year of Natural Disastersโ€

MP Zali Steggall described 2025 as a disastrous year with over 20 declared natural calamities including floods, cyclones, bushfires, and droughts.

โ€œDisaster funds come after the damage. What we need is investment in prevention and adaptation,โ€ she said.
โ€œThis crisis needs political courage, not delay.โ€

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฟ Tanzania: โ€œFarming and Tourism Under Threatโ€

MP Nusrat Hanje emphasized the harsh impacts of climate shifts on Tanzaniaโ€™s agriculture and tourism.

โ€œThis is why we must end fossil fuel expansion and adopt the Treaty. It’s essential for our future,โ€ she urged.

๐Ÿ’ช โ€œPoliticians Must Lead, Not Hinderโ€ โ€“ Rosa Galvez

Canadian Senator Rosa Galvez passionately defended the need for political leadership in the climate fight:

โ€œOur duty is to preserve this planet for the next generation. We must be the changeโ€”not the roadblock.โ€

๐Ÿ’ฌ WECAN: “No Climate Justice Without Ending Fossil Fuels”

Assembly Convener and WECAN Executive Director Osprey Orielle Lake concluded by stressing the urgency:

โ€œWithout halting fossil fuel use, we cannot avoid the worst climate outcomes. The Treaty gives us a clear path forward.โ€
She celebrated growing international supportโ€”even from fossil fuel-producing nationsโ€”calling it a โ€œsign of hopeโ€.
