As the world looks ahead to COP30 in Brazil, a growing coalition of international lawmakers is calling on global leaders to adopt bold, legally binding commitments to end fossil fuel dependenceβthe root cause of the climate crisis.
At a webinar organized by the Womenβs Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN), held during the Global Womenβs Assembly for Climate Justice, influential parliamentarians raised alarm over the increasing influence of fossil fuel lobbyists and the stagnation of global climate policy.
They urged immediate support for the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, which proposes to:

Tzeporah Berman, Chair of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, highlighted a gap in climate policy:
βFossil fuels are responsible for 86% of global emissions, yet have remained largely untouched in international agreements. This treaty is the missing piece.β

MP Zali Steggall described 2025 as a disastrous year with over 20 declared natural calamities including floods, cyclones, bushfires, and droughts.
βDisaster funds come after the damage. What we need is investment in prevention and adaptation,β she said.
βThis crisis needs political courage, not delay.β

MP Nusrat Hanje emphasized the harsh impacts of climate shifts on Tanzaniaβs agriculture and tourism.
βThis is why we must end fossil fuel expansion and adopt the Treaty. It’s essential for our future,β she urged.

Canadian Senator Rosa Galvez passionately defended the need for political leadership in the climate fight:
βOur duty is to preserve this planet for the next generation. We must be the changeβnot the roadblock.β

Assembly Convener and WECAN Executive Director Osprey Orielle Lake concluded by stressing the urgency:
βWithout halting fossil fuel use, we cannot avoid the worst climate outcomes. The Treaty gives us a clear path forward.β
She celebrated growing international supportβeven from fossil fuel-producing nationsβcalling it a βsign of hopeβ.
