Heartbroken and Alone: Ghanaian Woman Says Chinese Galamsey Lover Abandoned Her After Pregnancy

A young mother, Selina Adu Gyamfi, from Abodom in the Asante Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region, is crying out for justice and support after claiming that her Chinese partner, known as Leon, deserted her after she became pregnant with his child.

A Love Born Amid Galamsey

Selina recounted that she met Leon several years ago when he was part of a group of Chinese nationals engaging in illegal mining activities—commonly referred to as galamsey—in Bekwai. Their relationship quickly blossomed into a romantic one, with Leon frequently offering her financial assistance.

“He told me he loved me. He used to give me 1,000 cedis a week or 500 cedis every three days,” she said during an emotional interview on Nyira FM.

Selina explained that she was unaware of her pregnancy when Leon and his team abruptly left the area.

“I found out I was pregnant two months after he left. When I informed him, he initially sounded happy. But something changed… he started ignoring my calls and eventually blocked me.”

Left to Struggle Alone

In desperation, Selina reported the matter to the police, leading to Leon’s brief arrest. However, he was soon released, and since then, his whereabouts have remained unknown.

“I don’t know where he is. I’m now left with the child and no help. Leon was kind when we were together, but now I’m all alone trying to care for our child,” she said tearfully.

Public Appeal for Support

Now raising a 2-year-old on her own, Selina is calling on the Ghanaian authorities, immigration services, and the general public to help her locate Leon, who is also known by the alias Lee Hyung or Bra Yaw.

“All my efforts to reach him have failed. I just want him to take responsibility for his child,” she added.

This heartbreaking situation sheds light on a broader issue of foreign nationals involved in galamsey who form relationships with locals but disappear without accountability.
