In a significant political endorsement, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has publicly backed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate for the upcoming presidential elections. This support follows Bawumia’s recent victory in the party’s presidential primaries held on January 31, 2026.
During a courtesy call on February 3, 2026, Bawumia and his wife visited Akufo-Addo, who shared his praise via a post on social media. The former president praised Bawumia for his unwavering dedication and loyalty to both the party and the nation. In his words, “I recognize his commitment, character, and love for Ghana. With the backing of our party members and supporters, I am confident that he will guide us to victory.”
Bawumia emerged as the clear winner of the NPP primaries, securing 56.48% of the votes cast. His closest rival, Kennedy Agyapong, received 23.76%, while Dr. Bryan Acheampong garnered 18.53%. The election saw participation from over 211,000 delegates across more than 300 polling stations nationwide.
In his victory speech, Bawumia emphasized the importance of unity within the party, calling for collaboration among all party members to strengthen their electoral appeal. “To win the hearts of voters, we must present a united front,” he stated.
This endorsement from Akufo-Addo is seen as a crucial factor in solidifying Bawumia’s position as the NPP’s candidate as the party gears up for the elections in the coming months. The former president’s support is expected to mobilize party loyalists and enhance Bawumia’s campaign efforts.
