Asempa FM's O.B. Wins 2026 GJA Journalist of the Year Award

Philip Osei Bonsu, host of Asempa FM's Ekosiisen, has been named the 2026 GJA Journalist of the Year at the 30th GJA Media Awards in Accra.

Philip Osei Bonsu, the Asempa FM broadcaster widely known as O.B., has been named Journalist of the Year at the 2026 Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) awards.

O.B., who hosts the station's current affairs show Ekosiisen, picked up the GJA/P.A.V. Ansah Journalist of the Year Award at the 30th edition of the GJA Media Awards, as first reported by Citi News.

The ceremony took place on Saturday, November 7, at the Palms Convention Centre of the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra.

Among the other honourees, Mohammed Fugu of the Daily Graphic took the Best in Print News prize. Freelance journalist Nabil Ahmed Rufai was awarded Best in Television News for Stolen Childhood, his report examining child labour within Ghana's fishing sector.

This year's event focused on celebrating excellence, advancing media freedom and tackling hate speech in the digital era. It drew journalists, media houses and other stakeholders together to honour outstanding work across the industry.

Addressing the gathering, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour voiced concern over assaults on journalists carried out by state security personnel.

According to Mr Dwumfour, five attacks on journalists were recorded in January 2026, and security officers were involved in three of them.

He told the audience that members of the press should be regarded as partners in the country's development rather than as enemies of the state. He cautioned that any assault on a media practitioner amounts to an assault on press freedom.

The GJA Journalist of the Year title is the association's top individual honour, named after the late P.A.V. Ansah.
