The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has strongly condemned the recent stabbing of a university student during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) “Thank You Tour” in Bantama, Kumasi. Dr. Amoakohene described the incident as both disturbing and unacceptable.
In a Facebook statement released on Tuesday night, the minister announced that he has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the violent episode, which left a student from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in critical condition. “Disturbing reports and images from the NPP ‘Thank You Tour’ have come to my attention,” Dr. Amoakohene stated. “I have directed a full investigation into the incident that left a KNUST student critically injured. We urge the NPP leadership to ensure the tour is conducted peacefully to safeguard the security of our beloved region.”
The violence erupted on Tuesday at the Bantama Pentecost Church, where supporters of former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong were gathered as part of the ruling party’s regional tour. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the victim, a member of the “Jama” group from Unity Hall (Conti) on KNUST’s campus, was hired to energize the event. During the gathering, a wealthy associate of Mr. Agyapong allegedly offered cash to the group. However, a group of armed individuals, believed to be associated with the NPP, reportedly intervened to seize the money. The ensuing chaos involved gunfire, and a “Jama” group member was stabbed multiple times, subsequently being rushed to the emergency unit of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he remains in intensive care.
In response to the incident, Kennedy Agyapong’s team has filed a formal complaint with the Kumasi Central Police Command, although no arrests have been made yet. The NPP has yet to release a statement regarding the incident.
