Ashanti Region’s Support for Bawumia Highlights Leadership Confidence

In a significant display of political allegiance, the Ashanti Region has shown robust support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a candidate vying to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2028 general elections. This endorsement was highlighted by Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, the Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore, during a recent press conference held in Kumasi.

Dr. Afriye articulated that the strong backing Dr. Bawumia received is indicative of his competence and the trust that NPP delegates place in his capabilities. He argued that the voting trends clearly dismiss the notion of ethnic biases that critics often ascribe to the NPP, emphasizing that delegates prioritized leadership skills over tribal affiliations.

Notably, two other prominent candidates in the race, Ing Kwabena Agyepong and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, are also from the Ashanti ethnic group. Nevertheless, Dr. Afriye noted that the delegates overwhelmingly chose Dr. Bawumia, recognizing his strategic vision and leadership potential as crucial for navigating the party through the next electoral cycle.

During the conference, he expressed gratitude to the party members who participated in the election process, underscoring the high voter turnout across various polling stations. He also commended the NPP Presidential Elections Committee for conducting a transparent and well-organized election, which fostered confidence among candidates and observers alike.

Dr. Afriye urged Bawumia’s supporters to celebrate with restraint, framing the election as a unifying event rather than a divisive contest between winners and losers. He called for all candidates to remain adaptable and committed to fostering peace and unity within the party, as they rally behind the new flagbearer in preparation for the vital elections ahead.
