Attorney General Clarifies Timeline of Akonta Mining Investigations

The Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice has provided important details regarding the timeline of investigations by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) into Akonta Mining Company Limited. This clarification comes amidst political accusations surrounding the case.

According to a recent statement, the Attorney General’s office did not receive any documentation from the CID concerning Akonta Mining until September 2025, even though investigations had commenced three years prior. This information was disclosed in response to a Right to Information (RTI) request submitted by legal practitioner Jonathan Owusu Asare.

The official communication, signed by Information Officer Lydia Attoh, outlines that the CID initiated its inquiry into Akonta Mining in October 2022. This followed petitions from individuals including Ing Ken Ashigbey and lawyer Martin Kpebu, who raised alarms over alleged illegal mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.

Despite the CID’s active investigation during this time, the Attorney General’s office stated it could not verify when the investigative process was completed. The ministry noted that the CID formally handed over the case file to the Attorney General’s office around mid-September 2025.

This revelation is particularly significant given recent political tensions. Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, had previously accused the former administration of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of inaction regarding what he claimed was a completed CID investigation. He alleged that the CID had submitted its findings to then-Attorney General Godfred Dame, but no further action was taken, which he described as either incompetence or an attempt to shield politically connected individuals.

The Attorney General’s detailed timeline effectively counters these claims, affirming that the relevant docket was only received in September 2025.
