Australian Investments in Africa’s Extractive Sector Surpass A Billion

The Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, Berenice Owen-Jones, recently underscored the remarkable contributions of Australian companies to Africa’s development, particularly in the extractive sector. Speaking at the Australia Day celebrations held on January 26, 2026, she revealed that over the last five decades, Australian enterprises have poured more than A$60 billion into various projects across 30 African nations.

In her address, Owen-Jones articulated the significant role these investments have played in fostering economic progress and enhancing community welfare throughout the continent. “I take great pride in sharing the narrative of Australian firms’ impact on Africa’s extractive landscape over the past fifty years. With approximately 170 Australian mining companies operating in 30 nations, our investments have been pivotal in driving economic growth and community advancement,” she stated.

The High Commissioner specifically highlighted the strong collaborative efforts between Australian firms and the Ghanaian government, emphasizing projects like the Atlantic Lithium initiative, which promises to bolster bilateral relations and stimulate local economies. Owen-Jones noted that this particular project is poised to create thousands of jobs, both directly and indirectly, while also generating significant tax revenues.

She further pointed to the Edikan Perseus Mine, which employs over 1,100 local citizens, as an example of successful partnerships that benefit both the companies and the Ghanaian communities. Owen-Jones expressed optimism about the future, stating, “The relationship between Australia and Ghana has grown considerably during my tenure, marked by initiatives that enhance cooperation and mutual support.”

Australia Day, celebrated annually, commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet in Sydney Cove in 1788 and is observed with various festivities including public events and citizenship ceremonies across Australia.
