The Coordinator of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwah, has voiced her strong opposition to Ghana’s policy of deporting foreigners involved in criminal activities without prosecution. During an interview on UTV, as reported by MyNewsGh, Serwah condemned the government’s approach as both unfair and disrespectful to the nation’s justice system.
Serwah criticized the recent statement by the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, who announced that foreigners arrested for illegal mining, logging, and other environmental crimes would be deported following investigations conducted in the Ashanti Region.
Expressing her disapproval, Serwah argued, “How can you deport people destroying our environment without even prosecuting them? It doesn’t make sense.” She emphasized that Ghanaians face legal consequences for similar crimes and questioned why foreigners are treated differently. “If a Ghanaian engages in galamsey or cyber fraud, don’t we prosecute them here? So why should a foreigner be treated differently?” she asked.
Serwah further warned that this policy could encourage more foreigners to violate the law, knowing they wouldn’t face prosecution. “This is about the rule of law. We can’t have two systems of justice – one for Ghanaians and one for foreigners. It’s unacceptable,” she stressed.
In her appeal to the government, Serwah urged for a reassessment of this approach and advocated for a strengthened legal framework to ensure that all criminals, regardless of nationality, are held accountable. “If you commit a crime here, you should face the law here. Period!” she concluded firmly.
