Bawku Conflict: A National Crisis Extending Beyond Upper East Region, but Otumfuo’s talks with factions offer Mediation and Peace

The protracted Bawku conflict has escalated into a national crisis, affecting not just the Upper East Region but also parts of the North East Region, according to James Agalga, Chairman of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee. Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsfile on April 12, 2025, Mr. Agalga, who serves as the Member of Parliament for Builsa North, voiced his deep concern over the growing violence and emphasized the importance of supporting mediation efforts led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

A Personal Plea from James Agalga

“I speak with a heavy heart,” Mr. Agalga expressed, sharing his personal connection to Bawku, where he has previously lived and considers the people—both Kusasis and Mamprusis—as family. He highlighted that the conflict’s impact has spread beyond Bawku, reaching neighboring areas like Binduri, Bulenga, and Walewale, and cautioned that traveling through these regions has become perilous.

Historical and Ongoing Government Efforts

The origins of the conflict precede recent administrations, with its intensity noted even during President Akufo-Addo’s tenure when travel between Bulenga and Walewale became hazardous. Mr. Agalga shared a somber anecdote about a friend whose vehicle was attacked and who was shot while returning from his father’s funeral.

In response, the current government has actively engaged the parties involved. President John Mahama made early visits to the Nayiri in Nalerigu and the Bawku Naba this year, urging both factions to commit to the mediation process, to which they agreed.

The Role of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in Mediation

Mr. Agalga commended the initiatives of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who has held discussions with both sides, promising further engagement. He called for ongoing support for these mediation efforts to facilitate a resolution.

A Plea for Restraint and Patience

Mr. Agalga appealed to Bawku residents, especially the Kusasi community, to show restraint and patience, recognizing the legitimate frustrations surrounding the prolonged conflict. He stressed that achieving sustainable peace will require ongoing dialogue and understanding.

“Complex conflicts like this are not resolved overnight. However, I am confident that
