Bawumia Secures NPP Nomination for 2028 Elections with Strong Victory

In a decisive victory that positions him as the frontrunner for the upcoming 2028 general elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has secured the nomination to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The former Vice President received 110,643 votes, translating to 56.48% of the total valid votes during the recent presidential primaries.

Bawumia’s triumph clearly outpaced his opponents, with Kennedy Agyapong trailing at 46,554 votes (23.8%), and Dr. Bryan Acheampong, who garnered 36,303 votes (18.3%). While Bawumia’s percentage of votes was slightly lower than the 61.7% he achieved in the 2023 primaries, the latest results suggest a deeper and more expansive appeal among party delegates.

Notably, Bawumia’s margin of victory has significantly increased, demonstrating enhanced support. In the previous primaries, he won by a margin of 46,214 votes; this year, that gap has widened to 64,089 votes, indicating a stronger endorsement from the party base.

Geographically, Bawumia’s dominance was evident as he swept 14 out of 16 regions. His only significant losses came in the Central Region, which was won by Agyapong, and the Volta Region, taken by Acheampong. Impressively, he nearly swept 11 regions, including areas like Western, Bono, and Northern Regions, showcasing a level of support that surpassed his previous performance.

Even in the Upper East Region, where analysts speculated he might face challenges, Bawumia triumphed, winning 14 out of 15 constituencies. In key regions with substantial delegate counts, such as Ashanti and Greater Accra, his performance showed marked improvements. In Ashanti, he won 45 out of 47 constituencies, while in Greater Accra, he captured 32 out of 34 constituencies, a significant increase from his 2023 record.

Moreover, his victory margin in Greater Accra expanded from a mere 2,000 votes in 2023 to approximately 7,000 votes this year. Despite being Agyapong’s home turf, Bawumia improved his performance in the Central Region, winning seven constituencies compared to four in the last primaries. Even in Eastern Region, traditionally a stronghold for Acheampong, Bawumia prevailed by nearly 5,000 votes.

Overall, Bawumia won a total of 232 out of 276 constituencies nationwide, reflecting a robust acceptance that extends beyond mere percentages. While the raw voting figures might suggest a stronger showing in 2023, the 2026 results illustrate a candidate gaining broader appeal, deeper regional support, and greater confidence from delegates, effectively positioning Dr. Bawumia as a unifying candidate for the NPP ahead of the crucial 2028 elections.
