Calls for NAPO’s Retention as Bawumia’s Running Mate for 2028 Elections

A prominent figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has advocated for the continuation of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the vice-presidential candidate alongside Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the approaching 2028 elections. Akwasi Anti Asamoah, who previously chaired the Fomena Constituency, expressed his views during an interview broadcasted on Angel TV.

Anti Asamoah emphasized the significance of maintaining stability within the party by mirroring the strategy adopted by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who repeatedly selected Bawumia as his running mate despite facing electoral setbacks. He believes that such persistence ultimately led to their eventual success, a pattern he argues should be replicated with Opoku Prempeh.

Reflecting on the recent electoral loss in 2024, Anti Asamoah attributed the defeat to widespread voter dissatisfaction rather than any shortcomings on Opoku Prempeh’s part. He insists that the former Energy Minister has recognized his areas for improvement and has made strides to address them, positioning him as the ideal partner for Bawumia.

“Dr. Bawumia should retain NAPO as he is undoubtedly the best candidate for the role. Just as Akufo-Addo’s choice of Bawumia eventually bore fruit after several attempts, we should apply the same logic in this scenario,” Anti Asamoah stated. The duo faced a challenging election in 2024, ultimately losing to John Dramani Mahama and his running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

As Bawumia prepares for another campaign as the NPP’s flagbearer, the decision regarding his running mate remains a critical topic of discussion among party members.
