Residents of Cape Coast, along with nearby communities in the Central Region, are being warned about a scheduled power outage on Thursday, January 8, 2026. This disruption is set to occur as the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, alongside the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCO), undertakes significant upgrades to the local power transmission infrastructure.
The planned outage will begin at 6:00 a.m. and is expected to last until 10:00 p.m. During this time, engineers will replace the existing 33MVA transformer at the Cape Coast Substation with a new, more powerful 66MVA transformer. This upgrade is critical for enhancing the capacity and reliability of electricity supply in the region.
Officials from the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition emphasized that this outage is essential for the safe and efficient completion of the upgrade work. The new transformer is anticipated to improve power quality and stability, allowing more households and businesses in Cape Coast and its surroundings to connect to the national grid.
This initiative is part of a broader governmental effort to modernize and expand electricity transmission infrastructure, which is crucial for supporting national development. GRIDCO technicians will carry out the project under close supervision to ensure that the work adheres to the established timeline, allowing for the swift restoration of power.
Both the Ministry and GRIDCO have expressed their regret for any inconvenience this outage may cause and reassured the public of their dedication to providing a reliable and improved electricity supply.
