In a surprising turn of events, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has publicly requested forgiveness from former President John Dramani Mahama. This statement comes as Wontumi reflects on his past criticisms aimed at Mahama while campaigning for his party.
Wontumi, in an exclusive discussion with 1957 News, acknowledged the necessity of mending fences with Mahama, stating, “If I have offended him in any way, I sincerely apologize. No one is too proud to seek forgiveness, and I am no exception.” He emphasized that his previous remarks were driven by party loyalty during Mahama’s tenure as president.
Looking ahead, Wontumi urged Mahama to ensure a smooth transition of power should the NPP’s candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, emerge victorious in the upcoming elections. He cited the peaceful transfer of power from former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to Mahama as a precedent that should be followed.
“When I encounter Mahama, I will treat him with the respect due to our president. It is crucial for the sake of our democracy that he hands over power gracefully, just as it was done for him,” Wontumi remarked.
In addition to this appeal for reconciliation, Chairman Wontumi announced his intention to pursue the national chairmanship of the NPP, aiming to strengthen the party’s position as they prepare for the 2028 general elections. His commitment to the party’s success remains evident as he seeks to rally support for their future endeavors.
As political dynamics evolve, the importance of forgiveness and cooperation among leaders becomes increasingly significant in Ghana’s political landscape.
