Curfew in Binduri Updated Following Fatal Gun Attack

Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, the Minister for the Interior, has revised the curfew hours in Binduri and its neighboring areas, following a tragic gun attack. The new curfew now runs from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily, as advised by the Upper East Regional Security Council, and is already in effect.

A statement from the Ministry has called upon local chiefs, elders, youth, and residents to stay calm and work toward achieving peace. Additionally, a ban has been placed on carrying weapons, including guns and knives. The wearing of smocks, which can conceal weapons, is also prohibited. Individuals found violating these regulations will face arrest and prosecution.

Moreover, the use of motorbikes, tricycles, and ‘aboboyaa’ is banned for both men and women in the region, in an effort to curb violence and safeguard lives.

These measures follow a violent incident near Atuba, a suburb of Binduri, where attackers killed a man and set his body and motorcycle ablaze. Though the exact motive is unclear, security sources suggest it may be linked to the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy conflict.

The attack occurred just hours after Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Acting Inspector-General of Police, visited the Bawku Naba and pledged support for regional peace efforts. Yohuno assured that police officers would maintain fairness and professionalism.

In response, the Mamprugu Youth Association in Bawku has strongly condemned the incident and urged the government to boost security in Binduri. They also call on the area’s Member of Parliament, Mahmoud Issifu, to take immediate action to address the rising insecurity.
