Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, strongly cautions members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to avoid tribal incitements as the President prepares to nominate Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs). Growing concerns over tribal agitations and misinformation in constituencies like Mampong, Kwadaso, Kumawu, and Atwima Nwabiagya South have sparked this appeal.
Dr. Amoakohene emphasized, “Such tribal incitement is dangerous and may jeopardize the confirmation process for MDCEs, especially given the diverse makeup of assemblies in the region.” This call for unity and discipline was highlighted in a statement issued to the Ghana News Agency.
Addressing Tribal Bigotry in Mampong
Particularly alarming is the rise of tribal bigotry in Asante Mampong, which the statement describes as a deliberate attack to harm the reputations of Dr. Amoakohene and President John Dramani Mahama. Despite the regional vetting process presenting three candidates for the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) role in Mampong, some disappointed candidates appealed to the national secretariat. The national leadership has the right to accept or reject these appeals, and any changes at the national level reflect their decision, not regional meddling.
The Regional Minister affirmed that allegations against the region for adding names without due process are baseless and resentful. “Our procedures are transparent, fair, and equitable,” he insisted.
Call for Unity
Currently, no MDCE appointments have been made in the Ashanti Region. Dr. Amoakohene urged party members to ignore any unofficial reports and maintain focus. The statement encourages members not to let narrow interests and divisive rhetoric damage the party’s progress.
