Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai Advocates for Global Action on Cancer Awareness

In a powerful address during the World Cancer Day observance at Kumasi Technical University on February 4, 2026, Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai, President of Breast Care International (BCI), highlighted the urgent need for a unified global response to the cancer crisis. The event drew a diverse crowd, including health professionals, community leaders, and students, all gathered to discuss the pressing issue of cancer.

Dr. Wiafe Addai emphasized that cancer is a challenge that transcends borders and requires collaboration among individuals, corporations, and international organizations. She urged stakeholders to work together in areas such as awareness, prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer.

Noting the complexities of the current health landscape, she remarked on the paradox of increasing wealth amid persistent poverty, stating, “While we live in a world rich in resources, the reality of widespread poverty remains a significant barrier to accessing healthcare.”

As the Chief Executive Officer of Peace and Love Hospitals in Ghana, Dr. Wiafe Addai pointed to the growing burden of cancer and the necessity for innovative financial strategies to support those unable to afford medical care. Her call for sustainable partnerships and new funding models aims to ensure that no patient is turned away due to financial constraints.

Addressing a troubling trend regarding wealth distribution post-mortem, she advocated for better estate planning and responsible wealth management to bolster healthcare initiatives. “We can harness the legacy of the affluent to support vulnerable patients who need it most,” she added.

Under the theme “United by Unique,” this year’s World Cancer Day initiative focuses on personalized care and the individual experiences of cancer patients. Dr. Wiafe Addai urged the audience to adopt global best practices in healthcare financing to improve treatment access.

In her closing remarks, she challenged the community and global partners to redefine what it means to leave a legacy by supporting the establishment of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Comprehensive Cancer Treatment Hub. “Let us expand our understanding of legacy to include transformative healthcare solutions for future generations,” she concluded.
