Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu Initiates New Framework for Teacher Qualification Assessment

Accra, Ghana – Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has unveiled a new initiative aimed at reimagining the assessment of teacher qualifications. The National Teaching Council (NTC) Committee has been tasked with developing a framework that prioritizes academic training and hands-on fieldwork over standardized licensure exams.

This strategic move aligns with President John Mahama’s 2024 campaign promise to eliminate teacher licensure examinations if he is elected.

“We campaigned to end licensure exams and made a commitment to our electorate. To fulfill this, we are seeking professional advice on transitioning to a system without licensure exams,” stated Mr. Iddrisu. He emphasized the committee’s role in facilitating this transition, aiming to establish an innovative evaluation method.

Additionally, Mr. Iddrisu proposed offering one final chance for candidates who previously failed the exams to retake them before they are phased out. “It’s important to consider a last opportunity for a resit—making this part of your recommendations,” he suggested.

Advocating for a robust curriculum, he stressed that academic and practical training should form the bedrock of teacher education programs. “As pledged in our manifesto, integrating these elements into the curriculum of teacher training institutions is essential,” he noted.

Beyond teacher certification, Mr. Iddrisu expressed concern over the caliber of university graduates. These remarks were made during the inauguration of the new board of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC). He urged the board to focus on enhancing the quality of higher education across the nation, stressing its importance as a critical stage before entering the workforce.

“Your prime focus should be on the Commission’s regulatory mandate as higher education is pivotal for young people transitioning into the workforce,” Mr. Iddrisu concluded.
