Seth Worlashime Klaye, a seasoned mining consultant, has called on the management of Ghana GoldBod to consider extending the timeline for small-scale miners to secure new licenses. This appeal follows the recent revocation of all existing small-scale mining licenses by the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), as announced by GoldBod on April 14, 2025.
GoldBod has mandated that small-scale miners must obtain new licenses via its website starting April 22, 2025, with operations required to halt by April 30. However, Klaye, a former Executive Board member of PMMC with five years of experience, believes this timeframe is insufficient.
In an interview on TV3’s New Day’s Big Issue on April 15, 2025, Klaye remarked, “With the license process, a longer grace period would be beneficial. However, regarding the cessation of operations by foreign entities in the trade, the April 30 deadline seems appropriate.”
Klaye further suggested that the transition period for GoldBod to assume control from PMMC could be more lenient to give miners a fair chance to comply. He expressed concerns about the feasibility of processing all necessary paperwork within just eight days, stating, “I’m uncertain if the volume of applications can be managed within a week to ensure compliance and license issuance by April 30.”
