The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) of Ghana has successfully carried out the destruction of a significant quantity of opioid drugs. This decisive action came after the Tema High Court issued a ruling authorizing the disposal of the narcotics, which had been intercepted at Tema Port in December 2025.
The operation to seize these drugs was a collaborative effort involving the FDA, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). Authorities expressed grave concerns regarding the shipment, which contained opioid medications blended with other substances, prompting fears of potential illegal trafficking.
Further investigations revealed a series of documentation irregularities associated with the shipment, indicating violations concerning cargo monitoring and adherence to regulatory standards. In light of these findings, the FDA and GRA sought legal approval from the Tema High Court to destroy the seized drugs.
The court granted their request, allowing the FDA to proceed with the destruction in compliance with Section 132(2) of the Public Health Act. This action underscores the ongoing efforts of Ghanaian authorities to combat drug-related offenses and ensure public safety.
